Bingchav - Est. 2003 -

HomeAbout MeMay 24, 2007
A conglomeration of food lovers, chavacanos, and friends. Most of us are in Manila, and most of us meet, typically, on a Sunday, to eat and bond over food. The typical bingchav is not typical. We all come from different backgrounds, educational attainments, have our foibles and antics, and ultimately share our lives with people we care about. Meet us, break bread with us, live life with us.

Food is our common ground, a universal experience - James Beard

Home made jams. Yes. HOME MADE JAMS.

Very few commodities are "home made" nowadays and I truly take my hat off to entrepreneurs like Piere & Andrea of The Fruit Garden, who made it their mission to offer the pinoy consumers with an ALL NATURAL and HIGH QUALITY food product with a French twist.

With a wide variety of fruit jams to choose from, my personal favorite is the Strawberry Mint. It is absolutely perfect with Ginang Bukid's freshly baked Almond buns.

The jam come in two sizes and are great gift ideas or souvenirs for special occasions. A chic box of 6 assorted jams retail for P350.00.

Please be advised that a rebate of P5.00 is given for every empty bottle returned for recycling.

For many months, this was my secret place. But I also wanted to share this great find amongst my friends. So today, I decided to bring them to the top and "WOW' did they marvel at the sight, which gave them a good 360 degree view of Makati.

Never judge a book by its cover.
This was a lesson learned after dining at Rehman, a Persian restaurant specializing in Indian, Arabic, and Pakistani cuisine.

I can't be blamed for having pre-judged the place, when not a single diner was in sight. This, I have witness, for the nth time. Had not my good friend, Dan, insisted on Rehman, I would not have discovered the fantastic exotic food cooked by the affable proprietress herself, Mrs. Zubaida Butt.

One sip of the sweet Lassi was enough to appease my hunger. But all hell broke loose, when the samosas and the biryanis were brought to the table. Dipped with Rehman's sweet sauce, the vegetable samosas tasted heavenly. While the spicy biryani mixed with garlic sauce was beyond words. It was, by far, the best biryani I've ever had. Better than the other establishment serving the same cuisine.

Rehman is one of those few surprises that will definitely delight your taste buds.

Years ago, we went to the New Bombay, upon the suggestion of one Bingchaver. The food did not appeal to me nor did it excite my taste buds. But this time around, the food was palatable. Maybe because I was famished. Nevertheless, it is, by far, one of the better Indian eatery I have ever been to in Manila. The Basmati Rice is a staple and a must try. I had my Mutton Biryani and Rose Lassi drink. Heavenly!

What's in the "F" word? It could mean profanity, fun, fame, or fortune. But for the uncanny cafe cum gallery, it is all of the above. The F Word serves Pinoy fusion cuisine. Barely a year old, F has a considerable yuppie following and is packed during the weekends. Craving for desserts, F has it all with style.

La Grotta Cucina Italiana is one fine restaurant that is worth the weekend traffic. If not for the lighted sign outside the building. one might pass it by without ever knowing that it is an eating place. Their Risottos are so GOOD, especially the Quattro Formaggio (4 Cheeses). The soups are equally good, as well.
For quiet evenings and great Italian meals, La Grotto is the place for you.

They serve Spanish/Catalan food at Terry's. For appetizers, I suggest the Croquettas with Crab & Shrimp fillings. Chistorrado (baked rice with cheese and chorizo) and the Fabes Corde (baked beans) would do well for the main course. Quite filling, indeed, though the food lack the excitement that would make us go for seconds.

Very seldom do we get to dine in a nice Chinese restaurant. In fact, Hai Shin Lou was not the intended venue for dinner that evening. But, as fate would have it, most of the restaurants in Makati were closed on a Sunday. No regrets. The food was good and savory.
